Like our other Tabby daughters (Luna
and Jonnie), Phoebe
shows the angular and long body of her sire. She has plenty of the rear
width that he passes along so readily to his kids too. She also has that
nice, thin dairy elegance of her dam and her sire. In addition, she is
well-sprung like her other half-sisters and, on her smaller frame, her
dairy character really does jump out at you.
We were hoping for more in her
udder for a first freshener – there was enough to feed two nice sized
wethers, but there wasn’t much left for us. We think she has the
background to do much more (her maternal grand-dam was in the top 10 does
for one day milk test for 2004, 2005, and 2006). She is at the bottom of
the herd, in terms of dominance, and we know this affected the size of her
kids. We also think this affects her milk production.
Phoebe is a super love-able doe.
She started off as a “nipper”, but she used it in order to give and get
affection. She has grown out of it and is now just a very friendly doe –
quick to walk up to you, but not pushy. She is also a great mom and
always keeps a close eye on her kids.
She needs a smaller herd where she
can be closer to the top of the herd to get her "fair share". In the
meantime, we have given her a new feeding regime to see if her 2008 kids
and milking improve.
